Home Is Where My Arse Is

I’ve experimented with a few different types of low-budget mobile accommodation.
At the end of the day, home is where I park my butt!

Back in 2006, I got around in my old poo-brown station wagon quite a bit (top pic). It wasn’t pretty, but it was comfy. The fuel was too expensive to go long distances though, so I hitchhiked a lot.

In ’08 / ’09 I upgraded my gypsy home. Nia – my girlfriend at the time – and I, shared the van (above) very comfortably. It was spacious compared to the old wagon. Problem was, it was a really heavy rig, and it cost a lot to move around.

When Nia and I went to Europe in 2013, we came up with a super-light, super-cheap bivvy setup: a tarp, three pegs, and a bivvy bag (below). It wasn’t luxurious like living in a van, but it was really light to hitchhike with, and it did keep us dry and warm.

In Tasmania, I upgraded my tarp to a tent (below). Tasmania can be very cold! The tent was a little bit heavier than a bivvy, but it kept the cold wind out. Good compromise.

I really love my tent now. I can’t see myself going back to being a van gypsy. Fuel just gets more and more expensive. Also, it can be really hard to find places to park a van, where you won’t get hassled.

Every nomad finds their own ideal mode of accommodation. It’s awesome going to festivals and gatherings, and seeing all the creative solutions people come up with for their homes on the road.
