Devils Marbles – Karlu Karlu, Australia

Shannon loves big rocks.
When we drove past Karlu Karlu, she had to stop and risk her neck clambering all over them. I took pictures from a safe distance.

White people named Karlu Karlu “The Devils Marbles”. It’s easy to see why. It must have seemed like a place straight out of the old testament to them. No water, burnt red soil, massive, inexplicable and ominous stones… Enough to scare the wits out of parched, starving, lost whiteys.

We camped in the desert a few kilometres from the rocks. From the slight rise, we could see a million stars, and the distant lights of road trains, sliding slowly across the plain toward the horizon. Imagine traveling out here on a camel, with no contact with the outside world for months. You would be hallucinating about Devils soon enough.
