The Couch Surfing App: it’s for Finding Friends too.

If you’re not using the Couch Surfing app when you travel you’re missing out.

Couch Surfing is a long established resource for travelers.
The original website was set up as a hospitality exchange network.
The website is still great, but the app is outstanding.

Aside from being a really streamlined and convenient way to find free and friendly places to sleep all over the planet, the Couch Surfing app is also a great way to meet people for a chat, an excursion, a meal, a beverage, or whatever else you want company for.

The (relatively) new ‘Hangouts’ feature of the CS app is a great way to make friends quickly wherever in the world your travels take you.
A lot of travel experiences are a lot more fun if they’re shared, and the CS app makes it easy to find buddies even if you’re traveling alone.

When you log into the Couch Surfing app, and activate ‘Hangouts’ you are shown a list of other people in the CS community who are close to your location, typically within a few kilometres, and who are also looking for people to hang out with.

You can start casual screen chats with anybody who shares your interests, and also request to join existing chats.

I’ve met up with people using CS ‘Hangouts’ at less than an hour’s notice. I’ve set up one-on-one meet ups, and also joined groups of people for activities.

This is a social media app which really creates actual face to face interaction rather than just endless screen scrolling.

Couch Surfing is not a dating app, so there’s no presumption of anything beyond friendship and good company.

The couch surfing community is full of people who travel a lot. Couch Surfers are accustomed to sharing their homes with strangers, and being guests in stranger’s homes, so I feel like there is a really high standard of social skills in this community.

For a traveler in a strange city, being able to find people to hang out with who are as interested in meeting people as you are is a huge plus.

I’ve been using the Couch Surfing app for about a year now and I am loving it.
The app has helped me make heaps of new friends, as well as find free accommodation.
Win-win!
