Castle on the River – Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Every little Czech village I’ve traveled through today was picturesque, and Cesky Krumlov is definitely no exception.

The villages and landscape of Czech is so distinctive. I’m less than 30km over the border from Austria, but you really know you’re in a different country.

It took ages to get a ride this morning. The narrow little road away from the lake was a bit daunting for people to pull over on I think. There was hardly enough road for two cars to pass and the only spot I could find to hitch at had soft grassy shoulders sloping steeply into a muddy ditch. Not an ideal pitch, but… Sometimes that’s how it goes.

Finally a really sweet Czech girl dressed in faux national costume stopped for me. She was late for work at a tourist restaurant, so we didn’t have much time to chat, but she was super friendly and dropped me off in town before speeding away in her little hatchback.

Cesky Krumlov was worth the wait. This town is really beautiful. Cobbled streets, towering castle battlements, and a fast flowing river lined with trees flowing through and around the citadel.

I’ve found myself a green clearing beside the river to pitch my tent tonight, and after walking more than fifteen kilometres today, I will definitely sleep well… Especially with a little nightcap courtesy of Innis & Gunn.

Before I hit the sack I’m going to take a few photos though. This town is photographic gold.
